‘innovating for excellence’ - our vision

innovating for excellence brochure

Our regional clinical vision as set out in ‘From Evidence to Excellence’, is to create a stronger health system that is evidence-based, patient-centred, safe, high quality and championed by clinicians.

To achieve this, we are developing a coherent, over-arching quality strategy that will encompass;

  • Clinical leadership development

  • Service improvement expertise and capacity

  • Support and incentives for innovation

  • Productivity and value for money

  • Data analysis, interpretation and benchmarking

We see innovation as a key catalyst to pursue the goal of increased quality. We will maximise the benefit of research and service improvement by supporting the diffusion and adoption of innovation by all organisations for the benefit of patients.

East Midlands Regional Innovation Fund

The Regional Innovation Fund for the East Midlands opened to applications on 7th September 2009. There is up to £1.94 million available in 2009/10 to enable the adoption and diffusion, or spread, of new, evidence-based and leading edge services, pathways, techniques, tools and technologies and for new idea generation.

Applications from NHS staff or organisations, which can be in partnership with industry, the Third sector, academia, enterprise and others, are invited against the SHA’s and PCT, Key Strategic Priorities.

Each of our priorities has been set out as an innovation ‘competition’.

Applications are also invited for NHS staff to become Innovation Fellows or to apply for Innovation Bursaries, aligned to the Key Strategic Priorities.

Frontline staff have the opportunity to let us know about service challenges that could be overcome through new ideas and innovative thinking, by using the areas of clinical need competition area.

Through the Innovation ‘Seek and Find’ process, frontline staff can suggest that the Innovation Fund panel considers innovations which already exist, but not already implemented across the region.

Building the foundations for innovation

‘High Quality Care for All’ gave SHAs a new duty to innovate. To fulfill this duty, we are putting in place a number of key building blocks to support and incentivise innovation.

  • Building on the Next Stage Review principle of co-production, two Chief Executive sponsors for innovation have been appointed: Peter Homa and Andrew Kenworthy. Peter Homa is Chief Executive of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and Andrew Kenworthy is Chief Executive of NHS Nottingham City. Each organisation in the region has nominated a Board-level lead for innovation who will work with the SHA to further develop our innovation strategy.

  • We will use the Regional Innovation Fund to increase the quantity, spread and speed of innovation, improve quality and increase productivity.

  • We will work with PCTs to agree a small set of consistent quality and innovation metrics to be included in contracts.

  • Through our Quality Observatory, we will agree key data sets to enable Primary Care Trusts and other organisations to benchmark their outcomes and improvements locally and nationally.

  • We will work closely with all major stakeholders in health and social care, industry, education, the voluntary and third sectors to develop clear priorities for action, identify key deliverables and agree measures for success.
