Introduction
The SHA holds the statutory responsibility for the Local Supervising Authority for Midwives in the East Midlands. It discharges this responsibility through the appointment of a Local Supervisory Midwifery Officer for Trent (LSAMO).
The LSAMO is professionally accountable to the Nursing and Midwifery Council for the UK (NMC). The Midwives Rules and Standards (NMC 2004) http://www.nmc-uk.org/ govern the framework in which Midwives and Supervisors of Midwives meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Order 2001.
The function of the LSA is to ensure that statutory supervision of midwives within the East Midlands is of a satisfactory standard and thus ensures safe and secure midwifery care within its boundaries.
